PTA is a test in which we measure the hearing sensitivity of the person by presenting certain sets of tone at different levels of loudness and pitch. The higher the level of hearing sensitivity the severe is the hearing loss. The hearing loss can be due to different reasons, an Audiologist diagnoses the level of hearing based on which intensity level the person responds and what kind of hearing loss he has.

IA is a diagnostic test to check the structure and function of the tympanic membrane, ear ossicles(bones), ear pressure. In this test, the tacitness of the eardrum is tested . Too stiff or too flaccid tympanic membrane results in abnormalities.

Special tests like Short Increment Sensitivity Index(SISI), Tone Decay Test(TDT), Glycerol Test are used for differential diagnosis of cause of hearing loss at cochlea, auditory nerve and hearing centers in the brain.
Problems like Vertigo, Pinnitus, Hyper Sensitivity to sounds can be identified by these tests.
Brain Stem Evoked Response Audiometry(BERA) and OTO Acoustic Emissions (OAE) Tests are used to diagnose physiologically by stimulating the Cochlea and Auditory Nerve and higher hearing centers in the brain(Auditory Cortex).
These tests are done for different ages groups including new born to assess their hearing sensitivity without their subjective responses, difficulty to test population and individuals who desire accurate diagnosis without any subjective bias.
